Starting an aluminium window and door manufacturing unit means choosing a set of machines that must work together, one after another, to turn raw profile into finished frames. Buy too little and production stalls at the slowest step. Buy too much too early and you tie up cash in machines that sit idle.
This guide lists the machines a typical unit needs, explains what each one does, and shows which to buy first and which can wait until your volume grows.
Quick Answer
A basic aluminium window and door unit usually needs five core stations: a cutting machine, an end milling machine, a copy router, a punching machine, and a corner assembly (crimping) machine, plus a compressor, worktables and hand tools. Start with the essentials, then add automation such as double head cutting, heavy duty routing and CNC as your volume grows.
What is an Aluminium Window and Door Manufacturing Unit?
An aluminium window and door manufacturing unit is a fabrication workshop that buys aluminium profiles from an extruder, then cuts, machines and assembles them into finished window and door frames. It does not produce the profile itself. Its work is the series of operations that turn lengths of profile into frames that fit, close and seal properly.
Windows and doors use largely the same operations, so one set of machines usually handles both.
How Does the Production Process Work?
Most units follow the same order:
- Cut the profile to length and angle: Precision 90° and 45° cuts form the frame outer dimensions.
- End mill mullions and transoms: Machining the ends so they fit flush against the contoured frame profile.
- Route and punch holes and slots: Creating openings for locks, handles, hinges, hardware, and water drainage.
- Assemble the corners: Joining corners under pressure to form a rigid, square frame.
- Glaze, finish and pack: Installing gaskets, glass, and hardware, followed by quality inspection and protective packing.
Each machine below belongs to one of these steps. If a step is under-equipped, it becomes the bottleneck for everything after it.
What Machines Do You Need?
What does a cutting machine do?
A cutting machine is a saw that cuts aluminium profile to exact length and angle, usually 90 and 45 degrees for frames. It is the first step, so its accuracy affects every joint that follows.
APH Machine India makes several: a Single Head Cutting Machine for varied angles and lower volumes, a Double Head Cutting Machine that cuts both ends in one cycle for steady production, and a Fully Automatic UP-Stroke Cutting Machine for burr-free, any-angle cutting. Our comparison of single head vs double head cutting machines explains how to choose.
What does an end milling machine do?
An end milling machine shapes the end of a mullion or transom so it sits tightly against the frame. Without it, these joints show gaps and weak connections.
APH Machine India’s Aluminium End Milling Machine is available in manual and automatic models. See what an end milling machine is and how it is used.
What does a copy router do?
A copy router is a template-guided machine that cuts lock slots, handle holes, hinge openings and drainage slots in profile. It is how you prepare profile for hardware without programming.
APH Machine India offers a Mini Copy Router and Pneumatic Copy Router, a Heavy Duty Copy Router and a CNC Copy Router. Our guide to mini vs pneumatic vs heavy duty copy routers helps you pick.
What does a punching machine do?
A punching machine presses precise holes and slots into profile using a die, which is faster and more repeatable than drilling for repeated hardware openings.
APH Machine India’s Pneumatic Aluminium Section Punching Machine comes in single, double and four die versions, and a Hydraulic Punching Machine with six dies is also available for heavier work.
What does a corner assembly (crimping) machine do?
A corner crimping machine joins the corners of a frame under pressure so the frame is rigid and square. For thermally broken profiles, extra equipment is used to join the inner and outer sections.
This equipment is not part of APH Machine India’s current manufacturing range, so you would source it separately. Our team can advise on how it fits with the machines above.
Do you need a bending machine?
Only if you make curved or arched windows and facades. A bending machine shapes profile into curves without damaging it. APH Machine India’s CNC Bending Machine works in three or four axes. Most new units skip this at the start.
What supporting equipment do you need?
Beyond the main machines, plan for:
- A compressor: APH’s pneumatic machines work at an air pressure of 5 to 7 Kgf/cm²
- Worktables and roller tracks: for handling long profiles safely without surface scratches
- Measuring and hand tools: such as vernier callipers, precision squares and assembly clamps
- Glass cutting and glazing equipment: or a supply arrangement to buy glass pre-cut to size
- Packing materials and storage racks: to protect finished frames prior to delivery

What Should You Buy First, and What Can Wait?
Starter setup (lower volume, lower investment):
- A single head cutting machine
- A manual end milling machine
- A mini or pneumatic copy router
- A single die pneumatic punching machine
- A corner crimping machine, compressor and worktables
Growth setup (steady volume):
- A double head cutting machine for faster, consistent frame cuts
- An automatic end milling machine
- A heavy duty copy router for larger profiles or daily heavy use
- A double or four die punching machine to process more hole types per cycle
Advanced setup (high volume, complex work):
- An UP-Stroke cutting machine for any-angle work
- A CNC copy router for varied, complex machining
- A CNC bending machine if you want to offer curved windows
Buying in stages keeps your cash working while your order book builds.
What Else Should You Plan Beyond the Machines?
- Power supply: some machines run on single-phase power and others need three-phase, so check each model
- Floor space: machines plus roller tracks and material storage need more room than the machine footprint alone
- Skilled operators: even simple machines need people trained on settings, templates and safety
- A reliable profile supplier: your cutting and milling setups depend on consistent profile quality
- After-sales support: a machine that sits idle waiting for a spare part costs you production
What Mistakes Do New Units Make?
- Buying everything at once before orders justify it
- Mismatching capacity, such as a fast cutting machine feeding a slow, manual punching step
- Forgetting the compressor or buying one too small for several pneumatic machines
- Choosing on price alone without checking support and spare parts. Our guide on how to choose the right aluminium fabrication machinery supplier covers what to check
- Ignoring used machinery’s risks or dismissing it unfairly. See new vs used industrial aluminium machinery

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the first machine I should buy?
A cutting machine, because every other step depends on accurately cut profile. Choose single head if your volume is lower and your angles vary, or double head if you run steady, standard frame production.
Do I need CNC machines to start?
No. Manual and pneumatic machines with templates are enough for most new units. CNC makes sense once your work is varied or your volume justifies the investment.
Can the same machines make both windows and doors?
Generally yes. Windows and doors share the same cut, machine and assemble operations, so one line serves both, although door profiles can be heavier and may call for sturdier machines.
How much does it cost to set up a unit?
It varies widely with the machines you choose, whether they are manual or automatic, and your volume. The best approach is to decide your starter setup first, then request quotes for exactly those machines. Contact our team for guidance.
Do I need a compressor?
Yes, if you use pneumatic machines. APH’s pneumatic machines work at 5 to 7 Kgf/cm², so size your compressor for all the pneumatic machines running together.
Does APH Machine India supply the whole line?
We manufacture the cutting, end milling, copy router, punching and bending machines. Corner crimping, glass handling and similar equipment are sourced separately, and our team can advise on what works alongside our machines.
